Job Description

The Soto lab at Rutgers – RWJMS seeks a postdoctoral researcher for studies of the mechanisms of actin-dependent cell polarization, mostly in C. elegans. This NIH-funded position is ideal for motivated individuals with a passion for cell biology and developmental genetics. We use genetic, molecular techniques and live imaging to investigate how the cytoskeleton is polarized during key events in development, and how epithelial polarity is maintained in adults. Projects include adapting CRISPR and degron technology to investigate how tissue specific signals and actin-dependent events power morphogenetic movements, and testing human mutations that alter the cytoskeleton in C. elegans to uncover the underlying disease mechanisms. Postdocs in the lab are eligible to apply to the INSPIRE Program (https://rwjms.rutgers.edu/research/inspire/home), a highly selective program for postdocs interested in combining training in research, with mentored training in how to teach science effectively, to engage underrepresented students in STEM careers. Rutgers University has an Office of Postdoctoral Affairs to support career development. https://postdocs.rutgers.edu/

Job Requirements: The ideal background would include a Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics or related field and some experience with microscopy, biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology. We emphasize mentoring, so postdocs in the laboratory are supported as they develop skills toward research independence, including grant writing and manuscript preparation.

Environment and support for postdoctoral research:
The laboratory is part of the vibrant community of eight C. elegans labs of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Rutgers University on a shared campus. We are located in central New Jersey, close to New York City and Philadelphia. Rutgers also has a vibrant community of postdocs, including the postdoctoral Fellows funded by the INSPIRE Program (https://rwjms.rutgers.edu/research/inspire/home), a highly selective program for postdocs interested in combining training in research, with mentored training in how to teach science effectively, to engage underrepresented students in STEM careers. Postdocs accepted to the Soto Lab are eligible to apply to the INSPIRE Program. Rutgers University has an Office of Postdoctoral Advancement to support career development.
