Job Description

Postdoctoral associate positions are available in the Herschhorn laboratory at the Division of Infectious Diseases and International Medicine, Department of Medicine, University of Minnesota. Research projects are funded by NIH U01 and R01 awards.

We are an energetic research group that works on different exciting directions to study the molecular mechanisms underlying the interactions of HIV-1 with the immune system. We use interdisciplinary approaches at the interface of synthetic and molecular virology, immunology, cell biology and bioinformatics to gain new insights into complex biological processes, with the potential outcome of translating these insights into novel therapies and vaccines to treat and prevent viral infections.

Research directions include the study of virus evolution and adaptation, biology of HIV-1 entry, interactions of HIV-1 with neutralizing antibodies, design of novel immunogens, vaccine development, the fate of HIV-1 infection, molecular mechanisms underlying viral interactions with cellular factors, and construction of a new database of HIV-1 resistance to neutralizing antibodies (Ratnapriya et. al. Cell Reports 36, 109622 (2021); Herschhorn et al. Nat. Commun. 8, 1049 (2017); Herschhorn et al. Nat. Chem. Biol. 10, 845-852 (2014)). Some of the work is done in BSL2+ facility.

The positions are available immediately for highly motivated candidates. Successful postdoctoral candidates will have a Ph.D. (or an equivalent degree) in microbiology, virology, cell biology, immunology, computer science or a related field. For some of the positions, knowledge in molecular and cellular biology, as well as in protein purification techniques and previous work with animals will be specifically considered.

Interested candidates should email the following documents as a single PDF file to Alon Herschhorn, Ph.D. (aherschh@umn.edu):
1. Cover letter
2. Curriculum vitae including a list of publications
Review of applications will start immediately and continue until the positions are filled. Minorities are always encouraged to apply, and all job offers are according to the University of Minnesota guidelines and contingent on Department of Medicine Human Resources approval and a background check.
